What is near Wheelock Place

One of the strongest arguments for starting a day at Wheelock Place is what surrounds it. The mall occupies the north-western corner of the Orchard Road, Scotts Road and Paterson Road junction — a crossroads that has more retail floor area within 300 metres than most cities manage in a whole downtown. It is also the point where the shopping belt begins to give way to the greener, embassy-lined stretch towards Tanglin and the Botanic Gardens.

• ION Orchard — across Orchard Road, reached through the basement underpass. The largest luxury mall on the strip, with flagship boutiques, a substantial basement food hall and the ION Sky viewing gallery on the 56th floor.
• Shaw House and Shaw Centre — immediately beside Wheelock Place and connected by underpass. Home to Shaw Theatres Lido and Isetan Scotts.
• Liat Towers — next door on the Orchard Road frontage, long associated with Hermès, Zara and a Starbucks that has been a meeting point for decades.
• Tang Plaza and TANGS — diagonally opposite under its distinctive green-tiled roof, one of Singapore’s oldest and best-known department stores.
• Far East Plaza — a short walk up Scotts Road, the long-standing centre of Singapore’s independent youth fashion and tailoring trade.

• Wisma Atria and Ngee Ann City — both linked underground, together forming the retail heart of Orchard Road.
• Paragon — upmarket fashion and a large medical suite tower.
• Scotts Square, Delfi Orchard and Palais Renaissance — smaller, more specialised centres in the same cluster.
• Emerald Hill — a preserved street of Peranakan shophouses just off Orchard Road, and the most atmospheric place in the district for an evening drink.

Head the other way and Orchard Road changes character within a few hundred metres. Tanglin Road leads past the Tanglin Mall and Tudor Court towards the embassy quarter, and beyond that lies the Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only tropical botanic garden on that list. The National Orchid Garden sits inside it. Dempsey Hill, a former barracks turned restaurant and gallery precinct, is a short taxi ride further on.

For anyone with half a day, the combination works well: shop and eat around Wheelock Place in the morning while the mall is quiet, then take a short bus or taxi ride west to the Botanic Gardens in the late afternoon when the heat starts to drop.
